The whole tapestry is given over to forest, a wall of green trees that parts just enough to let a single rider cross a clearing in the distance. It was woven on a large scale in the 20th century, framed by a deep border of flowers and worked throughout in greens and soft golds. Tapestries like this are called verdure, from the French word for greenery, a genre the weavers of Flanders and Aubusson turned out for centuries, forests so dense that the landscape became the subject and the figures in it shrank to almost nothing. Sylvie hangs it large on a bare wall, where it draws the eye off into the trees and keeps it there.
