Kitchen Must Have

Sylvie Favorite

Every French garden once had a basket like this one, carried out at dawn and filled with whatever the morning gave up, beans and tomatoes and cut flowers still wet with dew. Found outside Lyon, it was woven by hand from willow in the early 20th century, the open weave letting soil and water fall straight through. Basket-making was its own village trade then, and a gathering basket was built wide and low so nothing at the bottom would bruise under what was piled on above it. Sylvie keeps one by the kitchen door for the same reason it was made, carrying it out to the garden empty and bringing it back full.
