For years these stood on the counters of French cafés, stacked with hard-boiled eggs for anyone who wanted one with their morning coffee. Found in Avignon, the 1940s stand is twisted from wire, with rings of little egg cradles, a salt pot up top, and a basket at the base for napkins. The boiled egg was the cheap café snack of its day, peeled standing up and dipped in the salt while your meal was still coming. Sylvie keeps it on the kitchen counter filled with eggs from the market, salt still in the top.
