Before it was cut down to sit in front of a sofa, this was a farm table, standing at working height in a French kitchen where the meals were made and eaten. Found in Avignon, it dates to the 20th century, a wide plank top over a single drawer, standing on four square legs since shortened to coffee table height, the oak stripped back to a pale wheat. Farm tables like it were the center of the household, built long and sturdy to seat everyone and take the daily work of a kitchen. Sylvie sets it in front of the sofa with a stack of art books and a vase of cosmos, the old drawer still there for whatever needs putting away.
