One-Of-A-Kind

Chairs like this came out of the village, made by the local carpenter rather than a furniture maker, one to a household and meant to last for generations. Found in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, this Belgian chair dates to the 19th century, a solid plank seat on four splayed legs with a back cut into a single flowering shape. The legs are driven straight into the seat and wedged tight, the oldest way of building a chair, while the pierced back was the one place the carpenter let himself show off. Sylvie keeps it by the door where shoes come off, the kind of chair that gets used for everything except sitting down to dinner.

Minor variations from the images may occur unless otherwise noted. All sales are final.
