Antique One-Of-A-Kind Sylvie Favorite

Every French candle once needed something to stand on, and the guéridon was the answer - a small pedestal table named after a Moorish character in 17th-century French theatre who walked onstage carrying a candelabrum on a tray. The form caught on after the play closed, and by the 1800s every room of every French house had one. This one was found in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, a turned column rising from three slender splayed legs, the drum top shallowly dished and fitted with a single small drawer in the apron, for the pen, the key, the letter, whatever didn't need to be on the top. Sylvie sets it next to a deep armchair as the kind of small table you reach for without looking.

Dear collector, as with many antiques, this piece may show signs of its age, including subtle repairs, a bit of movement, cracks, scratches, small holes, and surface variation from years of use. The hinge has been repaired, and there is a visible crack at the side. The top shows some surface scratches and variation to the wood. Minor chipping is present to the feet, and the piece sits slightly unevenly.
