Kitchen Must Have

Found in Villeneuve, this set of six canisters dates to the early 20th century, glazed white and checkered in cobalt blue, each capped with a peaked lid and named in painted script: Café, Chicorée, Farine, Pâtes, Riz, Sucre. Chicorée keeps its own jar in the row because the French had long roasted chicory root to stretch their coffee or stand in for it outright, a habit that outlasted every shortage that first drove it. Sylvie lines them along an open kitchen shelf, the coffee and flour and sugar all within reach of the morning.

Minor variations from the images may occur unless otherwise noted. All sales are final.
