Found in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, this 19th-century French oil painting shows a small village scene at the foot of a stone bridge. Two figures and a donkey pause on the path, a country house and a stand of trees behind them, the rolling green of the southern French countryside running off into the distance. Landscape paintings like this were the bread and butter of 19th-century French art schools, where every student painted the paysage before they painted anything else, the countryside understood as the place where a French painter first learned to look.
