Long before it was a place for fruit, it was where the day started, filled with cold water for washing before the house was up. Found in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, this faience bowl dates to the early 20th century, banded in blue and painted with cornflower and a small face modeled into either side. Wash basins like it stood on a stand in the bedroom in the years before plumbing, filled each morning from a jug kept alongside. Sylvie gives it a second life on the counter, piled with lemons, the face still watching while the fruit rises past it.
