Marble Bistro Table

In the brasseries of Paris through the Belle Époque and into the 1920s, marble-topped tables like this one held every coffee, every glass of wine, every evening conversation that ran longer than it should have. Found in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, this 1920s French bistro table has a rectangular marble top set on a cast iron base, the legs cast in soft Art Nouveau scrolls and joined low by a flat iron stretcher. Marble was the choice for a reason - coffee didn't stain it, wine wiped clean, and a wet glass left no mark; iron because the table never moved, no matter how many people leaned on it.
