Every inch of both doors is carved, a dense pattern of raised blocks and squares that throws a different shadow depending on where you stand. Found in Béziers, the cupboard is 19th-century Catalan, low and heavy in a dark wood, with hand-forged iron hinges and a single keyhole set between the doors. Pieces like it were built to last generations in a Spanish farmhouse, the ironwork forged and fitted by a village blacksmith rather than bought ready-made. Sylvie keeps it in the entry for the things that collect by a front door, the gloves and the spare keys and the candles no one has found a use for yet.
