Close to 250 years old, it was built in Sweden back when a letter was still written by hand and sealed with wax before it ever left the house. Found in Avignon through a Swedish dealer, the little desk has a single drawer and stands on turned legs braced low by a box stretcher, worn smooth where feet once rested against it. The drawer would have held the paper and the ink and the stick of sealing wax, everything a person needed to write by candle once the day's work was done. Sylvie set it back under a window as a writing desk, where it holds a candle and a stack of paper and goes on doing the one thing it has always done.
