For generations this was where a Catalan family gathered, the long table at the center of the farmhouse where every meal of the day was eaten. Found in Montpellier, it came out of a masia in Catalonia and dates to the 19th century, a wide plank top on turned legs braced low by an H-stretcher worn soft where feet have rested against it. The masia was the stone farmhouse at the heart of rural Catalan life, often held by the same family for centuries, and the dining table was the one piece the whole household passed through daily. Sylvie sets it with pears in a glass compote and whatever she cut from the garden that morning, the long table filling with people again by evening.
