Found in Montpellier but originally from a casa pairal in Catalonia, this 19th century marble console came out of one of the grand family homes handed down through generations. Set against the wall of an entrance hall or the best reception room, a consola like this was the first thing a visitor saw, dressed with a clock, candelabra, or a tall arrangement to announce the standing of the house. The scalloped marble top is the rarer, more decorative version of the form, shaped by hand rather than left a plain slab, the kind of detail only a serious house paid for. Sylvie uses it as an entry console or behind a sofa, the marble as ready for flowers and candles now as it was a century ago.
