Antique One-Of-A-Kind Wood

There's a kind of low table that lives in front of every Belgian fireplace, the one a glass of wine sets down on at the end of the day. Found in Montpelier, this antique oak coffee table was built in the trestle tradition, two X-frame legs joined by a long stretcher down the center and topped with a thick plank of pale oak. Trestle tables go back to the medieval workshop, where the form was meant to be taken apart and moved; the design lasted because it never gave up its strength. Sylvie sets it in front of a low sofa with a pile of art books and a candle burning down through the evening.
