Antique One-Of-A-Kind Sylvie Favorite

Found in Montpellier, this 1920s French primitive bench was built from a single thick plank of wood with four splayed legs driven straight into the underside, the joinery as plain as the form itself. Benches like this were the workhorse of a French country kitchen or workshop, pulled up to a table, used to sit on while peeling something, set against a wall when no one was on it. Sylvie sets it under a hallway window with a stack of books and a small vase.

This well-loved piece shows cracks, staining, and variation in the varnish and wood grain.
