Found in Avignon, this 19th-century table is the sort of low, honest piece that anchored a French room for a lifetime. A single wide plank makes the top, with a low arch cut into the front beneath it and straight, tapering legs at each corner. The low table made for sitting around is a fairly modern idea, which means a piece from the 1800s like this one first did its work standing at full height, in a kitchen or hall rather than in front of a sofa.
