Alsace has spent its history passed back and forth between France and Germany, and its country chairs took after the German ones. This one dates to the 19th century and was found in Avignon, a solid plank seat on four splayed legs under a tall back cut into a shaped silhouette. Sylvie sets it beside a bed, a place for a folded sweater or a stack of books, the shaped back rising behind them.
