French Walnut Console

France, 19th Century

One-Of-A-Kind

Found in Béziers, this 20th-century table began its life as a carpenter's workbench and has only lately been asked to stand still and hold things instead. Its thick top still carries the marks of the work done on it, with three drawers below for tools and a low shelf beneath for timber. A workbench was built heavier and steadier than any household table, made to take hammering and clamping for years on end, which is why it outlasted the workshop and now makes a console nothing could shift. Sylvie stands it against a wall in an entry with a lamp and a stack of books, the worn top left exactly as the work left it.

Minor variations from the images may occur unless otherwise noted. All sales are final.
