Framed Tapestry - Versailles
France, 19th Century
$895
A framed window into another world. This 19th-century Aubusson tapestry captures a scene from Marie Antoinette’s famed Hameau de la Reine - the mock pastoral village she had built at Versailles in the late 1700s to play at farm life, far from the watchful eyes of court. All woven with the precision and decadence only Aubusson could deliver.
Framed in wood, the tapestry is a rare survivor from the 1800s, when French ateliers sought to immortalize royal fantasies in thread. The colors have mellowed beautifully over time, with the soft blues and garden greens settling into an aged palette.
