Found in Avignon, this 20th-century French coffee table is made of solid pine, with the knotty grain and pale color the wood is known for. The four legs are turned in a simple baluster shape, and the apron is cut with a scalloped edge, the one decorative touch on an otherwise plain table. Pine was the everyday wood of French country furniture, light, and easy to work, used for the pieces a family bought to live with. Sylvie places it in front of a sofa with a stack of books and a bowl of fruit, the kind of table you actually put your feet on.
