Kitchen Must Have

This early 20th-century pine and oak kitchen island, found in Barjac, was built for the heart of a working French kitchen, where chopping, kneading, and gathering happened daily. Its generous top bears the soft wear of use, while the sturdy frame below was designed to hold baskets brimming with produce or stacks of enamelware ready for the day’s meals. We’ve raised it from the traditional antique table height to a more comfortable working height, making it just right for prepping and chopping in a modern kitchen. Today it’s just as practical, anchoring a kitchen with both storage and history. Sylvie would keep it piled with farmers market finds or let it serve as the landing spot for platters during a long, lingering dinner.
