Found in Béziers, this early 20th-century Spanish mirror is carved giltwood in the Rococo Revival style, with a shaped cartouche glass framed by open scrollwork, acanthus leaves, and carved flowers. A palmette crest fans out at the top, and the whole frame is pierced and carved in deep relief so the gold catches light from every angle. The Rococo vocabulary came to Spain from France in the 18th century and stayed in the decorative repertoire for generations, reappearing in pieces like this one well into the 1900s. The gilt has worn warmly in places, the way old gold finishes do. Sylvie hangs it above a bed, where it catches the morning sun.
