Discovered in the Netherlands and made in Spain, this 19th-century coffee table is in the country tradition of provincial Spanish furniture, with a single drawer, splayed legs, and side stretchers. The drawer pulls out with a small turned wooden knob, and the apron underneath is finished with a scalloped curve. Coffee tables didn't exist in 19th-century Spain, so this piece either started life as a low country table or was cut down to coffee table height at some point in the 20th century. The wood is light and warm, with the soft worn edges and hand-cut joinery of a piece made in a village workshop. Sylvie places it in front of a deep sofa with a stack of art books, a candle, and the cup of coffee that goes cold during a long phone call.
