Poterie de Cliousclat Bowl

France, 20th Century

$395

A genuine, signed Poterie de Cliousclat piece, this kitchen bowl is far from ordinary. Poterie de Cliousclat is situated in a small hilltop village in Drôme, France, a region with a rich history of traditional pottery that dates back to the 10th century. The clay in the area was of excellent quality and did not produce any taste to food, which is why the region produced magnificent bowls for the kitchen. Sylvie loves to use this bowl as a centerpiece to a vibrant kitchen, filled with farmers market provisions.

  • Notes from Sylvie:

Dear collector, this special piece has glaze chips mostly on the rim, and is designed as a planter so it has a drainage hole in the bottom.

The Poterie de Cliousclat has an extraordinary history that dates back to at least the 10th century. Nestled in a hilltop village in France's Drôme region, the pottery became known for using local, high-quality clay ideal for food storage due to its flavor neutrality. This clay was primarily used to create essential household items such as milk containers, all of which were made waterproof with a varnish to retain liquid without seepage

By the early 1900s, the pottery center had transformed into a full-scale workshop under Marius Anjaleras, who added facilities like a large wood-fired kiln and drying courtyards. This enabled it to meet growing demand while preserving artisanal methods.

Though the original factory ceased production in 2012, efforts by local authorities and pottery enthusiasts led to a revival, and production resumed in 2018. Today, Poterie de Cliousclat is celebrated both as a historic site and an enduring hub for traditional French pottery, balancing preservation with modern interest in artisanal crafts.
