French Low Fireplace Chair

France, 20th Century

Really tempted to just keep this one for ourselves.... A low fireplace chair, attributed to Charles Dudouyt, has a woven straw seat and a stout wooden frame. With its very low 12” seat height, this is a true collectors piece. We see her sitting low as visual interest in a beautifully curated living room, or as her intended use, by the fireplace. Due to her size, she could also be a perfect addition by a clawfoot tub, nursing magazines and candles.

This French Low Fireplace Chair carries the charm of intimate moments shared by mothers and their little ones. Attributed to the celebrated designer Charles Dudouyt, the chair's low height once made it perfect for nursing, as mothers sat near the warmth of the fireplace while their children played on the floor. Its solid wooden frame and woven seat reflect both function and timeless style, reminiscent of cozy fireside scenes and soft family gatherings.

Marseille, the vibrant port city of the Mediterranean, is a place where history, culture, and tradition collide. Founded over 2,600 years ago, Marseille is one of France’s oldest cities, with a rich tapestry woven from its diverse influences—Greek, Roman, and beyond. The city’s bustling markets, colorful neighborhoods, and sun-soaked coastline have long been a melting pot of ideas, artistry, and craftsmanship.

The surrounding Provençal landscapes, with their olive groves, terracotta rooftops, and rugged coastline, offer a glimpse into the soul of Southern France. It’s here, in and around Marseille, that we uncovered our latest collection of antiques—pieces that speak to the city’s maritime spirit and eclectic soul.

Sylvie rummaged through dusty, forgotten warehouses, met with third generation antique dealers and found herself wandering through vibrant seaside markets to curate this collection.
