Ochre French Tian

France, 19th Century

Oh, the French Tian Bowl. A charming antique piece with a storied past in French culinary tradition, originating in Provence during the 18th and 19th centuries. These bowls were used for slow-cooking confits and vegetable gratins. Sylvie loves to style these as fruit bowls, table centerpieces and stand alone statement pieces.

  • Notes from Sylvie:

Each tian is slightly different, this one is in really beautiful shape with just minor glaze chips at the rim. With a ridged interior, the handles and pouring spout are in great shape.

Found at a village market in Uzès, this tian was a favorite of local cooks who prized its vibrant color and functionality. These french treasures are crafted by skilled artisans using traditional methods, making them highly sought after by collectors. They were often used to prepare rich vegetable dishes in outdoor kitchens under the Mediterranean sun. For years, this piece played a central role in family meals, enjoyed under olive trees.
