  • Notes from Sylvie:

As you can see, this bench, has some cracks, chips and evidence of prior post beetle damage, but its surprisingly sturdy and comfortable to sit in. It wears its history on its sleeve.

This walnut 18th century church bench was created in Central Spain circa 1780, however, it made it's way to Catalonia, where Sylvie first laid her eyes on it. The arm rests and finial details are what make this antique treasure so special. She shows her age through a slight slant, however, she is sturdy as ever. She also shows her age on her feet, evidence of her many lives and uses. The patina has left a unique and absolutely breathtaking pattern seen all throughout the seat and backrest. A true one-of-a-kind and we know we will never find another like it.

Catalonia, a region rich in history and culture, has long been known for its distinct identity within Spain. From its medieval origins as a powerful principality to its modern-day status as an autonomous community, Catalonia has preserved its unique traditions and language.

A key feature of the Catalonian countryside is the Masia, traditional farmhouses dating back centuries, often serving as the heart of agricultural life. These stone-built structures, with their thick walls and rustic charm, were designed to be self-sufficient, housing families, livestock, and crops under one roof.

This particular item was unearthed in a 1750 Masia, a place steeped in history, where generations have passed down stories and traditions, making it a true artifact of Catalonia’s enduring heritage.
