It was a crisp morning at the brocante in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon when we spotted it—an antique cantor stool with a shape so unique it stopped us in our tracks. Its five legs flared out beneath a demi-lune seat, an unusual and striking design that immediately set it apart. Stripped back to its raw, aged wood, the stool’s surface told a story all its own, with decades of patina that hinted at its past life.

Cantor stools like this were once used in churches, their curved design allowing cantors to perch comfortably while leading hymns or chants. This particular stool likely stood in a small village church, a quiet witness to countless services and songs. The demi-lune shape wasn’t just elegant—it was practical, designed to provide stability while remaining compact enough to move easily. Its five-leg construction added an element of durability, ensuring it could withstand years of use.
