Antique One-Of-A-Kind Rare

The commode began as a bedroom luxury, the chest of drawers a household kept its finest linens and clothes in, and by the 1700s the French were carving them like small monuments. Found in Le Perche and dating to the 19th century, this one has three deep drawers carved with scrolling flowers and shells, a shaped apron beneath, and short curved legs, the whole thing stripped back to the bare wood. The carving is pure Louis XV, all curves and flowers and not a straight line to be found, a style the French loved so much they kept cutting it long after the king was gone. Sylvie sets it in a bedroom with a bust or a lamp on top, the drawers deep enough for a season of sweaters.

The tongue-and-groove top shows some separation at the joints, consistent with the natural movement of wood over time.
