French Spice Cupboard
France, 20th Century
$595
Eggs, spices, sugar, and tea all in one place? Say less. This early 20th-century French spice cupboard was designed to be the hardworking heart of a farmhouse kitchen, with hand-painted blue floral ceramic canisters labeled for essentials like café, riz, farine, sucre, thé, and more. The star feature, though, is the central œufs compartment, which opens to reveal a hidden shelf for egg storage- a practical touch that feels almost magical today.
Mounted on its original wooden frame, this cupboard would have once hung within arm’s reach of the cook, ensuring that every pinch of poivre or spoonful of cannelle was right where it needed to be. Now, it’s equal parts storage and showpiece - a need, not a want.
