Found in Avignon and originally from a farm in the Pyrenees, this early 20th-century French bench is a primitive piece built for a working farmhouse in the mountains. Benches like this lived pulled up to a long kitchen table, or by the door in summer where someone sat to take off boots after coming in from the pasture. The wood has weathered to a deep grey-brown from decades of mountain winters and constant use. Sylvie places it in an entryway under a row of coat hooks, with a basket of boots underneath and a folded throw on top.
