French Kitchen Cupboard
France, 20th Century
$3,595
Once home to jars of jam and Sunday china, still just as charming. Found in Avignon and dating to the early 20th century, this tall French kitchen cupboard embodies the spirit of Provençal cabinetry, where rural craftsmanship met quiet artistry. The lower doors are hand-carved with diamond motifs surrounded by feathered leafwork, a traditional pattern seen in the Vaucluse region that symbolized abundance and domestic care. Each line was cut by hand, likely by a local menuisier working with simple tools and a keen eye for symmetry.
The open shelving above, worn smooth from decades of use, still shows the soft traces of its original wax finish. It’s both architectural and intimate, the kind of piece that would have anchored a farmhouse kitchen for generations. Sylvie loves its presence against pale plaster walls, filled with ceramics, glass, and the hum of daily life continuing around it.

Notes from Sylvie:
The original finish is worn way in most places on this beautiful piece and some of the thin stringers on the shelves are a little delicate but its perfectly functional with small drawer and a lower cabinet with doors and a shelf. As with many antiques, this piece may show gentle repairs, cracks, scratches, holes, years worth of patina, and stains - just the way we like it.
