Primitive Bench

France, 19th Century

Made in the 19th century and sourced from a farm in the Alps, this primitive bench was never meant to impress - just to do its job well. A single, timeworn plank rests on stout legs, with proportions that feel sculptural. The surface tells its own story: uneven edges, old cracks, areas rubbed smooth by years of use, others left coarse and raw. Nothing has been corrected or cleaned up for effect. What you see is exactly what’s survived. Sylvie loves it stretched out along a wall, at the foot of a bed, or used low as a coffee table - especially in a wabi-sabi home where texture and age are the point.
