Spanish Gilt Mirror

Spain, 20th Century

Sylvie Favorite

Found in Avignon, this early 20th-century Spanish mirror is a Rococo Revival piece, the style that ran through Spanish gilt furniture from the 19th century well into the 1900s. At the top of the crest is a small carved flower above a rising central leaf, flanked by C-scrolls, with matching scrollwork at the two bottom corners. The Rococo vocabulary came to Spain from France in the 18th century and never quite left. The gilt has worn warmly in places, the way old gilding does. Sylvie hangs it above a fireplace where the gold catches the candles in the evening and the sun in the morning.

Minor variations from the images may occur unless otherwise noted. All sales are final.
