Vintage Glass Pedestal Dish - II

Outside Lyon there is a dealer we have known for years, and the loveliest things always come from the same place, his father's collection, built up over a lifetime of looking. This footed compote came from that collection, a shallow bowl of clear glass with a scalloped, petalled edge, raised on a fluted stem. It has the weight and the shine of old glass, the kind that catches the light on a table and holds it. Sylvie fills it with lemons and sets it in the middle of the table, where the glass throws little pieces of light across the cloth.
