Italian Preserving Pot

France, 19th Century

$395

A true Sicilian workhorse in clay form. This 19th-century preserving pot once held sardines or anchovies along the Mediterranean coast, its glazed interior designed to keep brine and oil cool in the heat. The exterior bears a pale glaze with scattered green brushstrokes - simple, clover-like marks that add a touch of hand-painted character to its utilitarian form. Found in Sicily, Sylvie likes it for wooden spoons, dried herbs, or a few too many paintbrushes.
